Although the program is a success, it is not without its challenges. In addition to needing access to solar panels and LED lights, the lights require a rechargeable lithium polymer battery with an IC controller that can charge during daylight and switch to operate the LED during the night. These parts are not always available in developing countries. However, the program is working to find solutions to these issues by collaborating with manufacturers from all over the world to help keep the costs low.
